The earliest measurements of benz[α]pyrene (BαP) in air samples were almost exclusively based on chroma-tography on alumina columns followed by ultraviolet absorption, in spite of the fact that the original discovery and isolation of BαP in coal tar was based on its fluorescence properties. With the increasing use of fluorescence techniques, the vastly increased sensitivity over ultraviolet measurements has become generally apparent. In air sample extracts containing the four polycyclics, benzo[a]pyrene (BαP) benzo[k]-fluoranthene (BkF), benzo[g,h,i]perylene, (BghiP), and BαP, ultraviolet measurements for BαP are particularly, inaccurate. Fluorescence measurements of BαP are much more accurate, but some improvement in accuracy seems desirable. The present work deals with improvement of the fluorescence measurement of BαP. It now is possible to measure BαP in the presence of BkF with greatly increased accuracy. Interferences resulting from the presence of benzo[k]fluoranthene are now much lower.  相似文献

A value of statistical life (VSL) is used in cost-benefit analysis (CBA) as a monetary measure of the benefits to people from small risk reductions that arise from safety projects. Despite its widespread use in a number of countries, the concept of a VSL remains controversial, not least because it implies acceptance of the underlying ethical assumptions of CBA together with the idea that ‘social welfare’ can be measured and aggregated in some manner. In addition, to comply with theory, variable VSLs for different groups within society would be advocated. However, without fail, empirically, it is the case that those countries that employ a willingness to pay based approach to cost-benefit analysis of a safety project appraisal tend to use a single value for that accident context that is independent of the per capita income level, or indeed other personal characteristics, of the sub-group in society to which the safety improvement will actually apply. This article presents a straightforward, but theoretically justified adaptation to the calculation of a VSL which allows empirical practice by policymakers i.e. the application of a “common” VSL for any particular hazard within a given society, to be compatible with a CBA decision making approach.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in 34 surface sediments along the Susquehanna River were investigated in 2000. The total concentrations of PAHs in the surface sediments of Lake Clarke, Lake Aldred, the upper Conowingo Reservoir, and the lower Conowingo Reservoir were 3.3+/-1.5 microg g-1 (n=9), 1.6+/-1.3 microg g-1 (n=4), 9.8+/-5.5 microg g-1 (n=7), and 4.0+/-1.2 microg g-1 (n=14), respectively. These represent the first comprehensive measurement of PAHs in Susquehanna River surface sediments. Overall, total PAH concentrations were relatively lower in Lake Aldred, which is more shallow and sloped, and significantly higher in the upper Conowingo Reservoir. The sediment PAH levels were related to river flow rates, which are indirectly correlated with the particle size of the surface sediments. Total PAH levels in all the studied sites were below the effects range median (ERM) of 44.8 microg g-1 with 38% (13 of the 34 sampling sites) exceeding the effects range low (ERL) of 4.02 microg g-1. Principal component analysis indicated that variations in the PAH compound patterns of each reservoir decreased from upstream to downstream, indicating that the surface sediments were mixed along the Susquehanna River. The PAH patterns in the lower Conowingo Reservoir sediments were a combination of those upstream sources. Source analysis using isomer ratios as indicators suggested that PAHs in the Susquehanna River surface sediment are derived from the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal and gasoline with coal as the major source of contaminants.  相似文献

The behavior of an amperometric organic-phase biosensor consisting of a gold electrode modified first with a mercaptobenzothiazole self-assembled monolayer, followed by electropolymerization of polyaniline in which acetylcholinesterase as enzyme was immobilized, has been developed and evaluated for organophosphorous pesticide detection. The voltammetric results have shown that the formal potential shifts anodically as the Au/MBT/PANI/AChE/PVAc thick-film biosensor responded to acetylthiocholine substrate addition under anaerobic conditions in selected organic solvent media containing 2% v/v 0.05 M phosphate buffer, 0.1 M KCl (pH 7.2) solution. Detection limits in the order of 0.147 ppb for diazinon and 0.172 ppb for fenthion in acetone-saline phosphate buffer solution, and 0.180 ppb for diazinon and 0.194 ppb for fenthion in ethanol-saline phosphate buffer solution has been achieved.  相似文献

Vegetation and soil surveys were conducted on metalliferous mine wastes in the northern and southern Pennines of England. Analyses of vegetation composition in relation to soil chemical variation were performed. Ordination analysis facilitated the detection of groups of co-occurring species which are characteristic of types of metal-contaminated soil. The results of regression analysis implied the importance of soil pH and concentration of available lead or zinc, depending upon region, in determining species distributions. A strong interactive effect was evident between soil phosphorus and zinc content in influencing species distributions in the southern Pennines sample.Regional similarities in the vegetation of apparently similar metalliferous soils existed. The unusually high species richness of some soils was associated with relatively low concentrations of heavy metals. Many species of relatively floristically-rich wastes were also colonists of surrounding grasslands or woodland. This indicated the potential importance of propagule availability and capability for rapid establishment on bare or unstable ground. Mechanisms of physiological stress avoidance, rather than heavy-metai tolerance, may explain the occurrence of non-metallophytes on soils contaminated with lead and zinc.  相似文献
